8th grade was a good year. We read Beowulf in English class, took a trip to Washington D.C., and I got a pair of Doc Martens! Those were the best boots ever, and it broke my heart when I outgrew them.
Lately I’ve been wanting another pair . I won’t be getting them anytime soon, as they’re not that practical for what I do now, but if I got a pair I know exactly how what I’d wear with them. It’s an easy choice, really. All I have to do is look to two of my all-time 90′s icons.
First up, Lisa Loeb.
I waxed poetic about Lisa just last week, and my love for her remains true. Great songs? Check! Glasses? Check! Pairing Doc Martens with adorable short dresses in her music videos? Check!
I think the “Do You Sleep” silver dress outfit is so perfect that I’d basically plagiarize the whole thing:

And then there’s Daria.
Some people might argue that Daria has little place as an idol, being a cartoon character and all, but I just give those people one of Daria’s patented eye rolls and start blasting Splendora.

My childhood friend mention she was wearing her 16-holes today, and then I read this? Is the universe telling me to buy a new pair of Docs? I LIVED in mine when in high school and most of college – I remember thinking I would even be wearing Docs on my wedding day (nope, hot pink silk heels).

I just got my first/last Docs a few years ago, in college. They were very sturdy, lasted for years. Satisfyingly clompy, too, which makes me happy.

Speaking of full skirts, have you seen any full, knee-length skirts on the market? I see full mini-skirts eeeeeverywhere, but it’s not my favorite look.
Oh 90s! I did a whole 90s week for my very first theme week, complete with Docs. Alas, I never figured out another way to style mine for the rest of the year and ended up consigning them. I still love them though. And Daria. Daria rules.
I loved my 14-hole Docs! I bought them my freshman year of college and wore them all through college and grad school. They’re in NYC now, I think. And Daria was my hero. Comparisons were made.
I never liked how Docs looked on my feet, and the leather wasn’t stiff enough to keep my long knee brace from slipping down. So I wore jump boots instead. I miss them so.
Jump boots sounds pretty darn awesome, too.
