I wore a lot of clothes today. The rest of the country may be caught in the latest Snow-torious storm, but where I live it just got cold. REALLY COLD. Today’s high was -5, but the wind made it feel like -14. I wasn’t quite ready to end the reign of No-Pants Katie, so I decided to layer like it was going out of style (three dresses, baby!).

The slightly ragamuffin result reminds me of The Little Match Girl, but (hopefully) my encounter with the cold will end a bit better.

It was still unbelievably cold, but the layers helped. A little.

Why yes, those are Canada mittens I’m wearing, complete with giant applique maple leaves. I prefer my patriotism in the form of novelty clothing items. I may or may not also have underpants with a giant Canadian flag on the bum.*

Feeling shamed that so many of you are still taking outdoor photos in the snow, I decided to stop being such a wuss and brave it sans jacket. Note, however, that the stylish mittens stayed on.

Apparently it was so cold my head was in danger of falling off.

I finally got so cold I started jumping between shots to stay warm. Timing? Not my strong suit.

Weeee!

In other good news worth of balcony jumping, the disease I was diagnosed with in the fall that’s supposed to be permanent may, in fact, be getting better! It’s early yet, but my fingers are crossed. What wasn’t so great is that when the doctor called me, I was in a meeting and my cell phone was in my bra (loooong story). Awkward…

So in celebration, and a feeble attempt to remember what it was like to be warm:

*I don’t :(   But now you know what to get me for Christmas!

  1. Good to hear you’re recovering! It seems it may have been for the best that I’m not going to CSU, because even positive 40 is too cold for me. I can’t imagine how you can take photos outside without freezing up like they do in “Day After Tomorrow.”

  2. You are delightful! You look so happy in your jumping picture! I love all your layers. I especially love the wooly socks and boots. Perfectly cozy and to combat the -39C that is today, I may have to try something similar soon! Also I may or may not have that pair of underpants… it also may say “real Canadian girls, accept no substitute”.

  3. Very cute! I love the colors of that scarf.

  4. Eep! Stay warm!

    I heart those mittens.

  5. I’ll keep my fingers crossed, too.

Oh dear— you got caught using your rack as a rack. Did you try a Vizzini-style “WHAT IN THE WORLD CAN THAT BE?” diversion?

  6. Well of course I love those mittens! I sent 2 pairs to my cousins living in Germany! And that’s great news about the recovery – even if it means an awkward phone in bra moment. We’ve all been there.
I can’t believe that you’ve got so many layers on! I would have never guessed. I’m inspired … as I gear up to head out into the storm we’re having.

  7. I can’t believe you’re working THREE dresses and TWO pairs of leggings here. I’m scrolling up to enjoy, again. All that indigo blue looks awesome next to your face.

Also, I’m crossing my fingers, too, for continued improvement in your health. And for more appropriate telephone placement next time you have to take a call in a meeting.

And finally, this post confirms that you cannot visit IPF North in winter. If you’re freezing in -14, I’m thinking yesterday’s “high” of -21 (low of -40 with windchill) may overwhelm!

    • I was talking Fahrenheit (and you may have been, too), which translated to around -24 Celsius or so. And I used to live in IPF North, though perhaps a more southern part than you.

  8. Yeah! Go Canada! I absolutely love the pop of colors in this outfit. Despite the fact that we have to dress warm for frigid weather that shouldn’t limit us to black, gray and white – you’ve proven just that.

  9. YAY! I’m so glad that things might not be as drastic as they were suspected to be. My fingers (and toes and eyes) are crossed for you!!

I giggled like crazy through this entire post. Love the bajillion layers and your patriotic gloves. :)

  10. Somehow the American flag just doesn’t translate into cheeky novelty clothing the way the maple leaf does. I do have a pair of red and white CCCP socks, complete with Lenin’s face on the calves, that I’m now inspired to work into an outfit; usually I just wear them hidden under boots and chuckle silently to myself.
