The link in last week’s Thursday Links to a mix-tape for Alice (of Wonderland fame) reminded me that it’s been a long time since I created a “fashion mix-tape” inspired by my literary loves.
Today’s inspiration doesn’t come from fiction, but from the seminal text for the foundation of modern biology: On the Origin of Species. I re-read this book every few years, and slogging though parts may be, it never fails to inspire me and remind me why I think there’s nothing more amazing than the natural world.
On Saturday I wished Darwin a happy birthday and today I want to dress like him. Well, not exactly like him – the guy enjoyed a high collar the likes of which would completely obscure my graceful and swan-like neck – but the inspiration is there.
I think the 19th century naturalist would be proud of how my sense of style is evolving.

There is grandeur in this view of life, with its several powers, having been originally breathed into a few forms or into one; and that, whilst this planet has gone cycling on according to the fixed law of gravity, from so simple a beginning endless forms most beautiful and wonderful have been, and are being, evolved.
- Charles Darwin, On the Origin of Species

You make Darwin stylish!
Great outfit!
I once took part in a musical production called “Happy Birthday, Charles Darwin” by Bob Diven— it was organized like a church service, but the sermon was about evolution, and the ‘hymns,’ had lyrics like “Praise mom from whom your life did flow/ praise dad who made the ovum grow….” and at the traditional plagal cadence at the end of each hymn, we all sang “ohhhhhhhhh yeah” instead of “aaaaamen.”
Fabulous stuff.
His site, thechurchofbob.com, doesn’t tell you much about the show. Sadly. This sidewalk chalk cartoon is his, though: http://thechurchofbob.com/boblog/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/Diven-Darwin-CU.jpg
the ruffled shirt…be still my heart.
This outfit is fantastic, but I think I might need those earrings. What are they? Are they terribly expensive? I bet they are, but oh, they are fabulous.
They’re very expensive: http://www.abrandtandson.com/Victorian_14kt_Gold_Real_Fossilized_Beetle_Earrings.html
The makers are calling them fossilized beetle earrings, but they’re misusing the term “fossil.” I’ve seen pieces like them before, and bet you could find something much cheaper. In fact, I could probably make them myself.
Holy crackers, those are expensive, but so beautiful. I’m not a crafty gal so I wouldn’t even attempt to make them myself, but I am definitely going to keep an eye out for something similar. Thanks, Katie.
