Pantsless Flapper Dudes* Make Everything Better

Today I indulged in some thrifting therapy to take my mind off of going through five (5!) interviews for a job that could have been pretty awesome and that I would have been excellent at and then not getting it. Suffice to say, Katie was in need of something pretty.

And did I ever find it. In moments like this words become futile, so I’ll just show you:

Let’s take a closer look:

Why, yes, that is a hand-rolled silk scarf with a polyptych design of a gentleman trying to win the favor of a lovely flapper woman and ending up with his pants around his ankles.

The scarf is labeled “Frimmel, by Geoffrey Howard,” but research a la internet isn’t giving me much to go on. I did find these postings on Etsy for “Frimmel” scarves, and the square, pink and brown version of my scarf on Ebay, but I haven’t found any information on Howard or who this Alfalfa-haired, giant-pantsed fellow is.

Have any of you come across this fella before?

*What were the male equivalent of flappers called? I want to call them “flippers,” but I have had aquariums on the mind recently so I think I’m just making things up.

  1. THIS IS AMAZING. I can understand why words became futile for you. I cannot express my glee at the sight of this scarf, with its madcap pants-ing narrative. Also, the ‘flipper’ is wearing sock garters! This made my day.

  2. Uh May Zing

    Also: jealoussss.

  3. Usually, the men were called “Sheiks” (rhyming with “Squeeks”), or sometimes “Gigolos.”

    • I second this—- “Cheaper By the Dozen” was so educational. Also, the Pep Boys dress this way.

Curses, I’m sorry about the 5 (!!) interviews coming to naught. Perhaps this will leave you free for ______________________ [insert endlessly awesome opportunity].

  4. !!! Why on earth would someone get rid of that scarf?!

  5. My goodness, this is quite possibly the best scarf ever. EVER. Sorry about the rough interviews, but this has got to help somewhat, yes?

  6. This is the best scarf ever!!! It was meant for you. Sorry to hear about the rough interviews. The universe may be preparing to send you something awesome though, if this scarf is any idication!

  7. That’s both crazy and awesome. And I’m really sorry about your job – I’ve been dropped after two and three interviews before, but five is just awful. *hug*

  8. How is this even a thing? I need to know the backstory of this amazing find! I’m so sorry that you didn’t get the job. 5 interviews is pretty unbelievable! Maybe this is just a temporary setback so that something even better can come on it’s way to you!

  9. Katie! I’m so sorry to hear about the job, but I’m glad to know that the scarf gods were looking down on you this week. That thing is stellar!

  10. It’s a most excellent scarf!

  11. Hello! I just listed another Frimmel scarf on Ebay; I have been trying to find any info I can on this chap, but nothing is available. If anyone comes up with anything, please pass it along. Hope you were able to secure a great position! God bless!

  12. Hi, Came across this site while doing some research on Geoffery Howard—awesome scarf and great find!! We have a scarf by him that we have had and treasured since the 70′s—bought it is California during our hippy days and have had it hanging on one or more walls in every place we have lived. Been here 30+ yrs. now and it hangs in my sewing room!! It is 26″x26″, gray background with big bell clad guy bending over to drink from a water fountain at a park in blues and greens—–it is wonderful. I too can not find anything about this artist, but wont give up—he has such a Peter Max and John Luke Eastman style!

  13. Just found a Jeffrey Howard Frimmel scarf, myself at Beacon’s Closet. Same sort of “story motif” But blues. Love it.

  14. While garage saling with my best friend, Lori, I came across a Geoffrey Howard “Frimmel” scarf for $3.00 – what a great find and buy! It is the same colors and style as yours and I just love the length and the contents. Can’t wait to accessorize with it.
