That was a really interesting and valuable read, and I applaud you for it. I witness a lot of anti-fat bias in my day-to-day life, from my roommates and elsewhere. It’s strange when we have to normalize what is already “normal.”
Thanks!
Augh, I’m not going to make a login over there, but commenter #1 already thinks we don’t have to make bigger mannequins because “size 12-14 averages in older women who don’t wear fashion”. Eyeroll. As a naturally size 12ish “older woman” I gotta say, my cookies? Frosted.
Ugh, my eyes nearly rolled out of my head.
Like Cynthia, I wasn’t willing to log in. I don’t know what all design school might include, but aren’t dressmakers dummies size-able, meaning that one might have a petite torso and wide hips or vice versa? Perhaps we should lobby for the use of these rather than stylized mannequins.
Most professional mannequins are single size, I believe — the adjustable ones are more used by individuals, and they a) have gaps and dials in/around the expandable parts, which poses as issue for designing, and b) only have a few settings for each measurement (so it’s not a one size fits all sort of thing).
