I’m starting my list of things to do while in Germany, but I’d love suggestions from people who’ve actually been there before.
So far I plan to:
- Eat a hamburger in Hamburg
- Eat a frankfurter in Frankfurt
- Nail 95 Theses to a church door (or maybe just my Master’s Thesis)
- Tear down a wall in Berlin
- Eat some black forest cake while in the Black Forest
- Develop a socio-political theory of labor and resource inequality
- Whistle “The Blue Danube” at the mouth of the Danube
- Learn to whistle
- Try to understand the appeal of David Hasselhoff
But what else? I’ll be in the southwestern part of the country, playing at being terribly continental by popping over to Switzerland and France for day trips.

I’ve heard that Strasbourg is fairytale pretty and has gorgeous wines, plus on the border of France and Germany (I think?). In Berlin I went on this really cool free alternative walking tour led by a mad aussie. It involved climbing into abandoned buildings, having a drink behind the wall, and lots of graffiti. When I was younger I went to Dachau and that was a sad and interesting experience. Maybe you can go to the Neuschwanstein Castle? Brilliant! You are going to have the best time!!
If You want to see some awesome airplanes, I mean supersonic, then go to Sinsheim. Dachau is stopping a human being; worth for visit.
If You want an experience for Your life, then drive on German Autobahn as fast Your car can. To drive a car at the speed of 250km/h, is an experience that cannot be forgotten and it is legal.
Try to sit in a beach seat called Körbe; it is awesome.
Happy travel.
Well, to continue with the hot dog and hamburger thing, you should absolutely eat a doughnut while in Berlin.
Which part of Switzerland will you be visiting? If you haven’t decided, might I lobby for Lucerne? I went there about twelve years ago and it is still the best place I’ve ever visited. It’s beautiful beyond words, it’s not overcrowded, it has interesting architecture and history and the people are unbelievably kind and welcoming.
Hope you have a wonderful trip!
eat berliner in berlin. have a great time!
Take a boat ride on the Rhine. Participate in a Volksmarch: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volksmarching. Have fun!
I don’t have any funny jokey advice, but if you’re going to be in Munich, eat some pork knuckle. So delicious! God, I want to go back to Germany.
