Katie Style – Ocean Colorblocking

Tank: Gap | Cardigan: thrifted | Skirt: Target | Belt: Target | Necklace: TRS | Shoes: Softwalks

Today I missed the ocean. The sights, the sounds, and the smells (well, most of them). There are several solutions to this problem:

  1. Rewatch The Voyage of the Mimi
  2. Loiter around the seafood tanks at Whole Foods
  3. Dress in cool blues and greens
This time, I chose color…and Ben Affleck.*
*But not in a creepy way. The dude’s like 11 there.

Katie Style – In My Easter Bonnet

Shirt, Gap | Skirt, Gap | Belt, Target | Necklace, Target | Shoes, Softwalks | Jacket, Gap

My favorite Easter ensemble is still the “This is my Easter Outfit” t-shirt I got when I was 11, but this combination is running a close second. Cool and comfortable for the warm weather we’re having, but stable enough not to be blown up over my head in the gale-esque winds we’re having. Just because the Easter Bunny brought me underwear, doesn’t mean you need to see it.*

*Every year. Some people get jelly beans. I once got a Winnie the Pooh thong.

As for my title, it may have been made famous by Fred and Judy, but I learned it first from The First Easter RabbitA cartoon classic if there ever was one – it even has Santa!**

**Santa also brings me underwear.

Katie Daily Style – Double Bubble Rectangle

  • Shirt – la Mama
  • Skirt – Gap
  • Belt – thrifted
  • Silk scarf – thrifted
  • Beret – Urban Outfitters
  • Flats – Naturalizer
  • Jacket – Gap
  • Purse – la Mama

The other day, Audi wrote about dressing to embrace her columnar shape rather than using clothing to create an hourglass appearance. With this outfit, I’m doing the opposite. Instead of accentuating my curvy, short-waisted figure with a skirt or belt at my natural waist or a nipped-in cardigan, this combination creates a rectangle.

Add a straight-cut denim jacket and it’s like you drew me with a ruler!

Call me square (or rectangular, whatever), but I like it.

Although, chances are what I really like is the double polka dot action going on. Whoever said “less is more” was obviously not talking about polka dots. Or Dippin’ Dots. But they were talking about polka music.

P.S. Remember how I wore this scarf last time? So pretty!

Chelsie Daily Style – Like a Peacock

I was wearing my fascinator at work, and a gentleman came up to me and told me that it is bad luck to wear peacock feathers indoors (he’s a regular though, and nice). Nothing bad has happened to me indoors today… though there was a terrible racket with banging and hammering earlier this afternoon at work… but I’m sure that was just some construction.

I got this peacock blue sweater back in high school. My second high school had uniforms, so whenever dress down day happened, you really had to have your A game on. My mom would take me out shopping just to get something new for a dress down day sometimes, and this sweater, is the result of one of those shopping trips. I still have a navy blue zip cardigan I got for the same reason too.

Seriously, I actually took this picture of a peacock about four years ago. We went camping and there was this petting zoo sort of place near the trail where we went hiking, and they had peacocks, amongst other animals. This is not a one footed peacock, it’s other foot is folded beneath it.

I remember wanting to go to another petting zoo back in university to see the fainting goat. Or were they miniature fainting goats? Well, I know they fainted. We went on expeditions to see the animals, mostly anywhere between 11:00pm-3:00am. I think we almost saw them once. Sometimes we just went to the dinner and had coffee and breakfast. I think Millie is the only other Interrobang that went on one of those trips with me. Good times…

Millie Daily Style — Summer Doldrums Edition

The end of July is always a sort of blah time of year for me. I’ve had a couple months of unstructured school (and thus have had enough time to fall into Grade A slacker grad student habits), September is far enough away that I’ve little motivation to go into Get Stuff Done mode, and besides half the people in my department are on holidays or not in the office. It’s usually super humid and hot (though, thankfully, not so much here), and the general atmosphere is thick and sluggish; even the cicadas* seemed sleepy. As a result, my outfits were more or less all been variations on jeans and a tank top. I swapped out the jeans for a plain skirt sometimes, or throw on a cardigan for the office, but it’s all been less than exciting, and I’ve had minimal motivation to do much of anything about it.

Like every year, though, the first week of August was a Get Stuff Done week. I had a breakthrough with my research, and as a result was really productive work-wise, I helped my friend move, I went to a really great concert/festival and I joined the gym across the street (more on this later). I had more thoughtful outfits, and I was ready to blog… and then the pipes clogged. The shower was unusable for a couple of days since it back-flowed (spewing all sort of gunk) whenever the bathroom sink was used, and while the landlord was speedy about fixing it, there were a couple of days when I wasn’t able to shower, and I’m not posting pictures of Polecat Millie. Especially considering that the pipes clogged after I went to the gym.

This is all a long-winded way of saying that after loafing around going “blerrrrgh” for a couple of weeks, I’m dressing better and feeling more motivated to talk about it. I’m apparently feeling more hammy about it than I have in a bit too:

blue outfit with fan

I am dainty and elegant! I am a woman of great poise and dignity! I.... am a bit silly today.

  • Shirt with poofy sleeves: gift from my Mom
  • Patterned skirt: Thrifted
  • Gorgeous fan: gift from Sarah from Spain
  • Blue glass necklace which isn’t really visible: ?

I LOVE this fan that the ever fabulous Sarah got for me when she visited Spain a few years ago. I’d sort of forgotten about it, but I refound it a few days ago when I was fishing around for a lock for my gym trips, and I’ve been using it all the time since then (and am baffled how I forgot about it in the first place). I figure it’ll be good for the bus to school too, since it’s so unbearably muggy even when it’s otherwise pleasant outside.

The shirt, though, I’m still waffly about. I’d've never bought this for myself, because I do not like poofy sleeves at all, but it’s sort of growing on me. It’s a different shape than most of my shirts, the colour’s lovely, and it’s got little bits of shirring on the shoulders and back which is nice… but the sleeves are poofy! So, what do you think of the shirt? Yea, nay, ambivalent?

I like the monochromatic blue look, poofy sleeve issue aside.

* I associate cicadas with August, but this year, I’m guessing because of the massive heatwave at the beginning of July, they were a month early. Anyone else notice this?

Chelsie Daily Style – I’m Blue Da Be De

  • Blue Button Down – Cotton Ginny
  • Light Blue Tank – Suzy Shier
  • Plaid Dress Pants – Winners
  • Necklace – ?
  • Hair Feather – Fawn

I really enjoy this bright blue shirt. I bought it more than ten years ago and never wore it too much. Unfortunately it is a bit temperamental and requires a lot of attention with the iron. No last minute deciding to wear this item, unless I suddenly become very diligent about ironing, which I doubt will happen anytime soon.
Going to pick up a push lawn mower tonight, care of Kijiji. I love that site!

Millie Daily Style: Now with Glasses!

Have I worn my glasses for a post yet? Somehow I don’t think I have, but I could be wrong (and am too lazy to check). So yeah, I wear glasses, though I get away with wearing them mostly for reading and school work. So, er, most of the time. I think they sort of make this outfit:

The glasses, sadly, don't show up so well, and are hard to photograph because of the glare. They're purple, plastic, and fabulous.

  • Cardigan: hand me down from my Mom
  • Tank top: Old Navy?
  • Linen skirt: thrifted
  • Teapot Necklace: gift from Katie

The cardigan’s lovely, but sadly is quite itchy (though only initially, for some reason — maybe my skin gets used to it after half an hour?) and the elbows are mighty thin, so I don’t wear it much hoping it’ll last longer that way. The linen skirt’s relatively new, and I completely love it. I’m not keen on ruffles, but this has just enough to make it interesting (and the asymmetry helps) without being especially ruffly. I dearly love linen clothes, so this skirt’s sure to see heavy wear this summer.

I wore this with brown tights and my fabulous mary janes to school yesterday, because it was still a bit chilly when I left. By the time I got home it was much warmer (and the bus was boiling hot, which didn’t help) so the tights came off as soon as I set foot in the door, and never really made it back on for pictures. I think it looks better without the tights, actually.

Chelsie Daily Style – Feeling blue?!

  • Skirt – Smart Set
  • Sweater – Winners
  • Leggings – Urban Planet
  • Headband Fascinator – Distillery

In these pictures you can see our avocado plants. They are the two bigger ones on the dresser beside the window. You may be surprised to learn that we grew them from seed. I’m surprised that they were grown from seed, I have never seen it done successfully, but have witnessed many unsucesses. The avocado trees are of the very large avocado variety, and no they do not bear fruit, they are only babies at 1 year old. From the posts I have read online, houseplant avocado’s hardly ever survive past one foot, and will not bear fruit for about 20 years. Even then, the fruit is bitter, and not really edible.

I finished reading the Stieg Larsson book “The Girl who Played with Fire” and I definitely did not like it as much as “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.” Both books were a bit disturbing, but the plot in the first one was just fuller, and the second one lacked, especially when the main character disappeared from the narrative for a good hundred odd pages. I learnt that the third book is very much a continuation of the cliffhanger from the second, and just a continuation, and that there is a fourth half written book in what would have been a ten book series had the author not died of a heart attack in 2004.

We went on a ghost walk in downtown Toronto over the weekend, in research for work (this is related to the quest for outfits via The Steampunk Emporium mentioned earlier). It was pretty interesting and well done. Lots of walking about the university area and listening to stories relating to the buildings. Reasonably priced for an interesting historical outing with a small group.

Millie Daily Style: Study Tube

I made this scarf the other day, and by made I mean I sewed two ends of a metre long piece of drapey jersey together into a tube. It’s very versatile, and I’ve taken to keeping warm with it while I study (typically flaked out on the couch). Problem is, it’s quite cozy, and I’ve, er, dozed off a few times; it’s now off study duty and on neck-warming duty. I’ve played around with ways to wear it, and I like this the best.

While the scarf looks bulky and hot, it's actually quite comfortable.

  • Orange scarf: self-made
  • Purple heart t-shirt: some store in Kensington Market
  • Black skirt: thrifted
  • Blue tights: local store I’ve forgotten the name of

I love wearing purple, blue and orange (or yellow) together in pretty much any variation, and this is no exception. This is a totally simple outfit, but I love it and felt awesome wearing it. In the store, I thought the scarf fabric was more peach than orange (and I wanted peach) but once I got home (and out form the fluorescent lights) it was clear it was orange. No matter, it’s a nice shade of orange that goes with a surprising number of my clothes, and I now have a new shape of scarf.
